LAST TIME OUT: GW fell to St. Bonaventure, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. Junior Garrett Heine scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season early in the second half.
COACH JONES' TAKE: "We need to be more positive and confident in front of goal to score on more of the chances we are creating. Defensively we need to play a solid, mistake-free 90 minutes."
SETTING THE TABLE: GW (3-2-0) is tied with VCU (2-1-3) for fourth place in the Atlantic 10 standings with nine points apiece, one point behind Dayton (3-0-1, 10 points) and Massachusetts (3-1-1, 10 points) in second place. Defending champion Fordham (4-1-0) sits alone atop the A-10 standings with 12 points.
HEINE'S HEROICS: Heine, who ranks third in the A-10 with seven goals and 17 points, has scored the game-winning goal in four of GW's seven victories this season, leading the league and ranking eighth in the nation. His seven goals are the most scored by a Colonial since Seth Rudolph had seven in 2012.
BETWEEN THE POSTS: Senior goalkeeper Jack Lopez has started four of GW's five A-10 contests and has allowed just two goals in 372 minutes of action, ranking third in the league with a 0.48 goals-against average and .833 save percentage in conference games.
SCOUTING THE RAMS: VCU is coming off a 2-0 loss at Saint Louis on Wednesday following a pair of scoreless draws against La Salle and Duquesne last week. Rafael Andrade Santos and Jason McGlothern lead the Rams with three goals and seven points apiece. Pierre Gardan boasts a 0.94 goals-against average and .745 save percentage with a league-high six shutouts in his 13 starts.
COACH JONES ON VCU: "VCU is a very good team who are very organized and composed in both attack and defense. They are a difficult team to break down and contain, but at this stage of this season we know every game is going to be difficult and a battle to win."
SERIES HISTORY: VCU leads GW, 4-0-0, in the all-time series, including 2-0-0 as A-10 rivals. The Rams won last season's matchup, 2-0, in D.C.
