WASHINGTON -- The George Washington men's soccer team steps out of Atlantic 10 play to host Longwood in its non-conference finale on Tuesday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
GW (6-5-0, 3-0-0 A-10) has won four in a row and five of its last six after defeating A-10 foe George Mason, 1-0, on Saturday -- the Colonials' first win over their Revolutionary Rival in a decade. Junior Garrett Heine scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season -- and his league-best fourth game-winner -- in the 30th minute and senior goalkeeper Jack Lopez notched his second consecutive shutout as GW held the Patriots to just five total shots and without a shot on goal in the contest.
Lopez, who has not allowed a goal since the first half at Davidson on Oct. 3, a span of 260:24, ranks third in the Atlantic 10 with a 0.98 goals-against average. He has allowed just one goal in three conference games covering 282:12 of action to rank second in the league with a 0.32 GAA and fourth with an .875 save percentage in A-10 contests. His two conference shutouts are also tied for the league lead.
Heine ranks second in the A-10 and among the top 40 in the nation in goals (6), goals per game (0.55), points (15) and points per game (1.36), and he and sophomore Koby Osei-Wusu are tied for fifth with three assists on the season. Heine also continues to lead the league and rank fifth in the nation with four game-winning goals.
As a team, GW ranks third in the Atlantic 10 with 1.36 goals per game after scoring 11 in its last six contests. The Colonials are also third in assists (17) and total points (47), and their three shutouts on the year are tied for the fourth-most in the conference. In addition, GW's one goal allowed in three league games is tied for the fewest in the A-10, and its 0.32 goals-against average in conference contests ranks second.
GW is 3-0-0 in A-10 play for the first time since 2000, when it started the conference season with four straight wins. The Colonials' current four-game winning streak is its first since taking six in a row in 2011.
GW is one of two teams in the conference to start 3-0-0 this season, joining reigning A-10 champ Fordham, while Dayton, which had a bye on Saturday, is 2-0-0. VCU is also unbeaten at 2-0-1 through three games.
Longwood (5-5-0) has lost two in a row following a 2-1 loss to Big South rival High Point on Saturday. Willy Miezan scored his team-best eighth goal of the season in the 64th minute, but the Lancers could not overcome an early two-goal deficit.
Nine different Lancers have found the back of the net this season, led by Miezan, who is tied for the Big South lead and 10th nationally with his eight goals while ranking second in the conference and 19th in the NCAA with 17 points. Goalkeepers Carl Carpenter and Carlos Canas have split time in net this season, with Canas boasting a 0.69 goals-against average and .833 save percentage, as well as both of Longwood's shutouts.
Tuesday's contest marks the eighth meeting in the last 10 seasons between the Colonials and Lancers, and GW leads the all-time series, 4-3-0. Last season, the Colonials defeated Longwood, 3-2, in overtime, as Angel Valencia scored the golden goal in the 97th minute. GW trailed, 2-1, before Christian Lawal netted the equalizer in the 87th minute to force overtime. Oliver De Thier also scored for the Colonials.
