WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team goes for its 12th straight win on Saturday afternoon when Atlantic 10 rival Richmond visits the Charles E. Smith Center for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
Coming off an 83-69 win over Saint Joseph's on Wednesday evening, GW is 2-0 in A-10 play for the second year in a row. The victory was the Colonials' 11th in a row, equaling the sixth-longest streak in program history, as GW improved to 13-2 to match its best-ever start.
Sophomore Caira Washington topped 20 points for the third straight game with a season-high-tying 23 points, and junior Naismith Trophy candidate Jonquel Jones posted her fifth double-double in the last six games and her seventh of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Schaible added 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Colonials, who lead the A-10 in scoring margin (+15.3 ppg), have outscored opponents by 18 points per game during the win streak. Washington is averaging 20.0 points on 66 percent shooting over her last five games to raise her season scoring average nearly four points (12.5 ppg). Jones, who is leading the league in rebounding with 11.3 boards per contest, is the only player in the A-10 averaging a double-double on the season, as she also ranks fourth in scoring with 16.0 points per game.
GW has won three straight against Richmond and is 20-10 all-time against the Spiders, including a 72-58 victory at Richmond last season. Jones netted a double-double with 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting and 12 rebounds to lead the Colonials, who shot 49 percent in the game. In the teams' last meeting at the Smith Center in 2013, GW rallied for a 57-54 victory as Chakecia Miller scored four points in the final 11 seconds.
Richmond (9-5, 1-1 A-10) has won six of its last seven games, including a 67-61 victory over A-10 rival St. Bonaventure on Wednesday evening. Sophomore Janelle Hubbard poured in 24 points and was 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, while junior Lauren Tolson added 15 points and five assists. The Spiders' lone loss since Dec. 14 was a 65-64 overtime defeat on Sunday in the A-10 opener at Fordham, as the Rams scored in the final second to take the game.
Three Spiders are averaging double figures in scoring behind Hubbard's 14.4 points per game, which ranks 11th in the A-10. Genevieve Okoro, a preseason all-conference second team selection, is third in the league in rebounding (8.1 rpg) and sixth in field goal percentage (.515).
Richmond boasts two of the top three-point threats in the A-10, as Liz Brown is second in the league in three-point percentage (.474) and Hubbard is third (.462). As a team, the Spiders rank third in the conference in both three-point percentage (.350) and threes per game (6.1).
