WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer team hits the road to take on Virginia Tech on Tuesday evening. Kickoff from the Hokies' Thompson Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
GW (3-2-0) is coming off a 2-1 loss to Saint Francis on Saturday. Sophomore Tobi Adewole scored his first goal of the season, burying the rebound of senior Andri Alexandersson's free kick in the 16th minute to tie the game, but the Red Flash scored the game-winner on a penalty kick early in the second half.
Junior Jonny Forrest (3g) and sophomore Garrett Heine (2g, 2a) lead the Colonials with six points apiece, and they are tied for fifth in the Atlantic 10 with 1.20 points per game. Forrest is also tied for fifth in the league with three goals and 0.60 goals per contest, and Heine and junior Philip McQuitty are tied for seventh with 0.40 assists per game. In addition, junior goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe ranks second in the conference with 4.80 saves per game.
As a team, GW is tied for fourth in the A-10 in scoring, averaging 1.80 goals per game. The Colonials also rank fourth with 1.60 assists per contest.
Virginia Tech (4-3) has won two in a row following a 2-0 win over Wake Forest on Friday. Niels Kirch and Ricardo John each scored for the Hokies, while Som Essome, who was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday, assisted on both goals. Three Hokies have tallied five points apiece - Kirch (2g, 1a), Essome (1g, 3a) and Brad Vorv (1g, 3a) - to pace Virginia Tech. The goalkeeping tandem of Ben Lundgaard and Ben Lockler have split time in net and combined to post a 1.13 goals-against average and an .800 save percentage, as the Hokies have not allowed a goal in over 196 minutes after recording back-to-back shutouts. Lundgaard leads the ACC and ranks 17th in the nation in saves per game (5.25).
Former Atlantic 10 rivals, GW and Virginia Tech will meet for the first time since 2008 on Tuesday night. The Hokies hold a slight 5-4-1 edge in the all-time series, which dates back to 1971.
