WASHINGTON - Fresh off a victory at league-leading Duquesne, the George Washington women's basketball team faces another tough road test on Saturday when it visits Fordham. Tipoff from Rose Hill Gym is set for 2 p.m.
GW (16-7, 7-3 A-10) and Fordham (18-5, 7-3 A-10) are currently tied for fourth place in the Atlantic 10 standings. Saturday's game will not only be a battle for conference positioning, but it also pits the third-highest scoring offense in the league (GW, 77.3 ppg) against the top defense in the conference (Fordham, 57.7 ppg allowed).
The Colonials knocked off Duquesne, 80-68, on Wednesday. Freshman Caira Washington scored a career-high 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting and completed her seventh double-double with 14 rebounds, while grad student Danni Jackson tallied 17 points and nine assists.
Graduate student Megan Nipe became the 29th member of GW's 1,000-point club on Wednesday. She entered the game needing 12 points for the milestone and scored 13, tallying her 1,000th on the first of two free throws with 1:17 to go.
With 16 victories, the Colonials have surpassed their entire win total from 2012-13 when they went 14-16, and the seven league victories match last season's total when they finished 7-7.
GW is 17-2 all-time against Fordham, including 7-2 at Rose Hill Gym. Jackson has averaged 16.7 points and 3.0 assists in three games against Fordham, including 14 points last season.
Fordham is coming off a 56-45 win at Saint Louis on Wednesday. Erin Rooney led the Rams with 15 points and nine assists and Samantha Clark had 14 points. After shooting 55 percent in the first half, Fordham scored just 14 points on 20 percent shooting in the second.
Rooney is the A-10's second-leading scorer, averaging 18.7 points per game, and she ranks fourth in the league in assists (5.3 apg) and 10th in rebounds (7.7 rpg). Abigail Corning (13.6 ppg) and reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Hannah Missry (10.3 ppg) are also double-figure scorers and are both three-point threats, as Corning shoots at a .416 clip from long distance, ranking third in the A-10, while Missry averages 2.8 treys per game, second-most in the league.
The Rams advanced to the Atlantic 10 title game last season and earned a berth in the WNIT, where they reached the third round. Under the direction of third-year head coach Stephanie Gaitley, Fordham was picked to finish fourth in the A-10 preseason poll.
GW returns home to host A-10 rival VCU (17-6, 5-5 A-10) on Thursday at 9 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network. The Colonials and Rams will Play 4Kay to raise breast cancer awareness as part of the WBCA's annual initiative.
