WASHINGTON - George Washington men's basketball will host an exhibition game against NCAA Division II Bloomsburg University on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Charles E. Smith Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
GW is 10-0 in exhibition games since 2004 when the NCAA required Division I programs to face college teams. Three of those 10 victories have come against local Division II program Bowie State, including an 85-68 win over the Bulldogs at the Smith Center last Nov. 2.
The Colonials return six players from last season's team which posted a 24-9 record overall and 14-1 mark at home, finished third in the Atlantic 10 at 11-5, advanced to the A-10 semifinals and received an at-large bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
Juniors Patricio Garino, Kevin Larsen, Joe McDonald and Kethan Savage are expected to be the leaders for a GW team picked to finish second in the A-10 in 2014-15, while fourth-year Head Coach Mike Lonergan has added a five-player recruiting class, highlighted by guard Darian Bryant and forward Yuta Watanabe, that will be counted on to make an immediate impact.
Bloomsburg is coached by John Sanow, who is in his ninth season at the helm of the Huskies after serving as an assistant on Coach Lonergan's staff at Vermont in 2005-06. Bloomsburg was predicted to finish fourth in the East Division of the 18-team, two-division Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference this season after finishing 16-12 overall, 10-6 in league play and reaching the PSAC quarterfinals in 2013-14.
The Huskies return three key starters from last season's team in guard/forward Alssene Saintilus (11.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and guards Jon Riles (9.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg) and Charles Haigler (8.7 ppg, 3.5 rpg), and welcome five freshmen and two transfers to their program.
Saturday's exhibition will feature a 30-second shot clock, a rules change being examined by the NCAA during exhibitions across the Atlantic 10 Conference this preseason.
GW will officially begin the 2014-15 campaign on Friday, Nov. 14 against Grambling State at the Smith Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., with the fourth annual Home Opener Tailgate on 22nd Street in front of Smith Center set to begin at 4 p.m.
