FREEPORT, Bahamas - The George Washington women's basketball team will spend the Thanksgiving holiday in the Bahamas as part of the 2014 Junkanoo Jam, opening against N.C. State on Friday at 1 p.m.
The Colonials will play in the Freeport Division, which also includes Purdue, which advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament, and Texas Tech, who will face off on Friday at 3:15 p.m. The winners will play in the championship game on Saturday at 3:15 p.m., preceded by the consolation contest at 1 p.m.
All games will be played at St. Georges High School in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, the home of junior Jonquel Jones.
This marks the Colonials' fourth appearance at the Junkanoo Jam, the most of any Division I school in tournament history, with prior visits in 2003, 2005 and 2009.
GW (3-2) is coming off an 89-51 rout of Grambling State on Monday afternoon. Freshman Kelli Prange scored 23 points, topping 20 for the second time in five games to start her career, and sophomore Caira Washington posted a double-double for the second straight game, finishing with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Aaliyah Brown (11) and Jones (10) gave the Colonials four players in double figures for the third straight game.
GW dominated the boards against the Lady Tigers, 56-27, and has outrebounded its opponents in all five games this season. The Colonials lead the Atlantic 10 in both rebounding defense (33.6 rpg) and rebounding margin (+14.8 rpg).
Prange leads the Colonials in both scoring (16.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg), ranking third and fifth in the league, respectively.
A 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifier, N.C. State (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season on Monday evening, falling at Tulane, 60-51. The Wolfpack was held to its lowest shooting percentage of the season, making just 30.8 percent of its shots from the field. Len'Nique Brown led N.C. State with 14 points and six rebounds.
Three players are averaging double figures in scoring, led by Miah Spencer with 15.6 points per game and Dominique Wilson with 13.4. The Wolfpack is averaging more than 70 points per game on the season and outscoring its opponents by more than 10 points per contest.
Under the direction of 2014 espnW ACC Coach of the Year Wes Moore, N.C. State is receiving votes in the most recent Top 25 polls.
Also receiving votes in the most recent national polls, Purdue (2-1) defeated Toledo, 66-48, on Sunday. April Wilson led the Boilermakers with 12 points. Ashley Morisette paces Purdue with 15.7 points per game this season, while Whitney Bays, the 2014 Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year, is averaging a double-double with 12.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per contest.
Texas Tech (4-0) is undefeated on the season following a 65-57 win over Morgan State on Sunday. Dayo Olabode posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Kelsi Baker added 17 points and seven boards in the victory. Baker paces the Red Raiders with 15.3 points to go with 8.0 rebounds per game, while Olabode is tops with 8.5 boards per contest and adds 12.8 points per game.
