WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team concludes its three-game homestand on Monday afternoon when Grambling State visits the Charles E. Smith Center for the teams' first-ever meeting. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m.
GW (2-2) will play for the second time in less than 48 hours and the fifth time in 11 days following Saturday afternoon's 75-65 loss to No. 9/8 Maryland at the Smith Center. The Colonials led by one at halftime, but the Terps pulled away early in the second half.
Four Colonials scored in double figures in the game, led by junior Jonquel Jones (18 points, 10 rebounds) and sophomore Caira Washington (10 points, 10 rebounds) who each posted a double-double - the fifth time in 24 games played together that they have achieved the feat in the same contest. Sophomore Hannah Schaible and freshman Kelli Prange scored 11 points apiece to round out the double-figure scoring for GW.
Prange leads the Colonials in both scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 rpg), ranking eighth and fifth in the Atlantic 10, respectively. In addition, senior Lauren Chase is third in the league in assists, averaging 5.3 per game after recording 17 in her last two contests.
GW has outrebounded its opponents in all four games this season and leads the A-10 with a +11.2 rebounding margin. The Colonials' opponent on Monday, Grambling State averages just 30.8 boards per contest and has been outrebounded by 16.5 per game through four games this season.
Grambling State (2-2) is coming off a 67-58 win over LSU-Shreveport on Saturday evening. Yosha Watson led the Lady Tigers with 19 points and six rebounds while Mariah Gilliam scored 15 points off the bench.
Watson paces Grambling State with 16.3 points and 5.0 rebounds through four games this season. Gilliam also averages double figures in scoring with 11.5 points per contest, while three other Lady Tigers are averaging 9.0 points per game or better.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Nadine Domond, Grambling State returns just one player - senior Jaylan Bodiford - from a 2013-14 squad which went 11-20. With 11 new players on the roster, the Lady Tigers were picked to finish eighth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. One of those newcomers, freshman Dierre Ely, was named the SWAC Preseason Freshman of the Year by College Sports Madness.
