WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team visits crosstown rival American on Monday evening for the Eagles' season opener. Tipoff from Bender Arena is slated for 5 p.m.
GW (0-1) returns to the District after opening its 40th season of women's basketball with an 88-75 loss at reigning Atlantic Sun champion Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night. Freshman Kelli Prange posted a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds in her collegiate debut.Senior Lauren Chase and sophomore Hannah Schaible each scored 11 points and freshman Brianna Cummings added 10 to give the Colonials four players in double figures. Sophomore Shannon Cranshaw drained three of GW's five three-pointers and finished with nine points in the game. The Colonials held a commanding 50-30 rebounding advantage, as eight different players pulled down at least four boards.
GW and American have split meetings the last four seasons, with each team winning twice on its home court. Last season, the Colonials cruised to a 77-64 victory over the Eagles at the Smith Center to pull within one in the all-time series, which AU leads, 12-11.GW scored 51 points in the first half of that win and got a combined 56 points from Schaible (15), Chakecia Miller (18) and Danni Jackson (23), and Schaible was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for her efforts, as she added five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Alexis Dobbs led the Eagles with 15 points, while Shaquilla Curtis tallied 11 points, six boards and four steals and Jen Dumiak added 10 points and seven assists.
American was picked to finish second in the Patriot League preseason poll after finishing second in last season's standings and earning a bid to the WNIT, finishing with a 22-10 overall record. The Eagles lost the three-time All-Patriot League selection Dobbs, who averaged a team-high 13.4 points and 4.3 assists last season, but return 2014 Third-Team All-PL selections Jen Dumiak and Arron Zimmerman. Dumiak, who was also tabbed to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, averaged 10.0 points and 4.2 assists per game a year ago, while Zimmerman recorded 10.1 points and 4.8 assists per contest.Following Monday's game, the Colonials will return to the Charles E. Smith Center for their home opener against Bowie State, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
