Palazzolo, Persons Lead GW Golf at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman Vince Palazzolo recorded the team's top finish while senior Jack Persons closed with his best round of the tournament as GW golf completed play at N.C. State's Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
Palazzolo shot a 2-over-par 73 in Tuesday's final round on the par-71, 7,307-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course to tie for 24th place in the 93-player field at 6-over 219 (76-70-73). The T24th-place showing is the best finish in Palazzolo's three collegiate events so far this fall and was second-best among Atlantic 10 players in the field behind Rhode Island's Billy Walthouse (T15th, +3 216).
Persons carded a 1-over-par 72 to climb 16 spots into a tie for 36th at 10-over 223 (73-78-72). The San Francisco native tied for eighth in the field with 37 total pars followed closely by Palazzolo's 35 and rookie Zack Bailey's 34.
As a team, GW closed with a 19-over 303 to finish in 14th in the 18-team field at 44-over 896 (296-297-303), beating out Wofford, Bowling Green, Western Carolina and USC Upstate.
Host N.C. State recorded a 54-hole total of 6-under 846 (283-283-280) to post a nine-shot victory over runner-up East Tennessee State. NCSU's David Cooke and ETSU's Adrian Meronk tied for medalist honors at 5-under 208.
Bailey tied for 46th at 12-over 225 (74-72-79), sophomore Lucas Farmer tied for 61st at 16-over 229 (73-77-79) and junior Steve Piela placed 91st at 33-over 246 (83-83-80).
GW will play in a D.C. Metro area tournament for the second time in three weeks at the Maryland Intercollegiate at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland on Oct. 13-14.
