WASHINGTON - The Charles E. Smith Center will play host to four regular-season meets and the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship, the George Washington gymnastics team announced today as part of its 2015 competition schedule.
GW will open the 2015 regular season on the road for the first time since the 2005 season when the Colonials face Maryland and West Virginia in College Park, Maryland, on Friday, January 9.
GW returns home to host the eighth annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational on Sunday, January 18, against EAGL rivals North Carolina and Pittsburgh, along with Temple and Cornell. The Colonials have finished in first place at the event in each of the past two seasons.
On Sunday, January 25, the Colonials travel to visit West Virginia to face the Mountaineers and Iowa State before returning home to host Bowling Green for Brownie & Girl Scout Day on Sunday, February 1.
The Colonials next travel to the west coast for a pair of dual meets, first visiting Sacramento State University on Friday, February 6, before traveling to Davis, California, to take on UC-Davis on Sunday, February 8.
GW returns to the Sweetheart Invitational at North Carolina State University for the fourth year in a row on Saturday, February 14, at Reynolds Coliseum. The full field of competing teams will be announced at a later date.
The Colonials return to College Park, Maryland, for the second time on Friday, February 20, for a quad meet against the host Terrapins, Towson and William & Mary, before traveling to Kent State University for a dual meet one week later on February 27.
GW will host the annual Pink Meet on Sunday, March 8, when it welcomes Western Michigan and Yale to the Smith Center.
The Colonials will conclude the regular season by facing Towson twice in three days in a home-and-home weekend. First, GW travels to SECU Arena for a Friday-night tilt on March 13 before wrapping the regular season at home on Sunday, March 15, against the Tigers for Senior Day.
For the second time in five years the Charles E. Smith Center will play host to the EAGL Championship on Saturday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m. The Colonials will welcome North Carolina, NC State, Towson and New Hampshire for an afternoon of championship routines.
GW returns 10 lettterwinners, including reigning EAGL Rookie of the Year Chelsea Raineri, and welcomes seven freshmen student-athletes as it looks to claim its first-ever EAGL Championship.
At last year's conference championship at the Wittemore Center in Durham, New Hampshire, the Colonials finished in fifth place as a team and had four gymnasts tie for first place on an event. It marked the first time since joining the EAGL in 2005 that GW gymnasts had achieved a first-place finish at the championship meet.
Then-freshman Chelsea Raineri scored a 9.85 to tie for first place on vault while then-seniors Betsy Zander, Brittany Doran and Kiera Kenney each scored 9.875 on uneven bars to finish in a first-place tie with Maryland's Karen Tang.
