WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team hosts Atlantic 10 rival La Salle on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center.
GW (13-6, 4-2 A-10) and La Salle (9-9, 4-2 A-10) are currently tied for third place in the A-10 standings. GW is 31-4 all-time against La Salle, including 14-1 at the Smith Center, in a series which dates back to 1981. Graduate student Danni Jackson has averaged 10.7 points and 4.3 assists in three career games against the Explorers. Last season, GW beat La Salle, 74-57, in Philadelphia, as five Colonials scored in double figures.
At 13-6, GW has posted its best record through 19 games since 2007-08 and its 4-2 A-10 mark is its best start to league play since 2008-09. The Colonials have won nine of their last 11 contests.
GW boasts the A-10's third-leading offense, averaging 76.7 points per game, which ranks 41st in the nation, behind six players who are averaging 8.0 points per game or better, including four in double figures. The Colonials also rank third in the league in rebounding with 43.7 boards per contest, including 48.5 per game against conference opponents. Sophomore Jonquel Jones (11.2 rpg) and freshman Caira Washington (9.7 rpg) rank first and second in the A-10 in rebounding in league games.
After winning its first four games of Atlantic 10 play, La Salle has dropped its last two, most recently a 64-52 loss to Saint Joseph's last Sunday. Leeza Burdgess posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Alicia Cropper scored a team-high 17 points.
Micahya Owens leads the Explorers with 12.9 points per game, followed closely by Cropper with 12.1. Burdgess is La Salle's top rebounder, averaging 7.7 boards per contest, which ranks 10th in the A-10, to go with 9.0 points per game. La Salle boasts the third-best scoring defense in the A-10, allowing just 59.3 points per game, but scores just 58.7 points on 34.9 percent shooting, ranking 12th and 13th in the league, respectively.
Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Jeff Williams, the Explorers were picked to finish 10th in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll. La Salle lost all five starters from last season's squad, which went 8-21 overall and 4-10 in league play. Its 2013-14 roster features seven newcomers.
GW visits Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts on Wednesday for an 11:45 a.m. tipoff in Amherst, Mass.
