WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team rings in the New Year and concludes non-conference play with a matinee contest against Bluefield State on Tuesday. Tipoff from the Charles E. Smith Center is set for 12 p.m.
GW (8-4) defeated crosstown rival American, 77-64, on Saturday for its fourth straight victory. At 8-4, GW has posted its best record through 12 games since 2007-08 en route to the NCAA Sweet 16. In addition, it is the Colonials' first four-game win streak since Nov. 26-Dec. 3, 2011.
GW used a dominating first half to beat American, building a 17-point halftime lead. Graduate student Danni Jackson, junior Chakecia Miller and freshman Hannah Schaible combined for 56 points in the game, including 38 of the Colonials' 51 points in the first half. Jackson matched her career high with 23 points, while Miller tallied 18 points and Schaible had 15.
Jackson and Schaible were both honored by the Atlantic 10 on Monday for their performances against the Eagles, as Jackson was named Player of the Week and Schaible earned Rookie of the Week. GW swept the A-10's weekly awards for the first time since 2005.
With back-to-back 20-point performances, Jackson has raised her season scoring average by two full points to 12.0 points per game, ranking second on the team. In addition, she is the seventh Colonial ever with 400 assists in her career and just the third with 1,000 points and 400 helpers. Averaging 4.6 assists per game, which ranks sixth in the A-10, she now ranks sixth all-time at GW with 410 assists and 23rd with 1,110 points.
Tuesday's game is the first-ever meeting between GW and Division II Bluefield State, the Colonials' third first-time opponent this season after playing Jackson State and Jacksonville State earlier in the year.
Bluefield State (4-10) has not played since a 79-61 victory over Bowie State on Dec. 21, its second straight win. Kearah Jeffreys led the Lady Blues with 22 points, while Shay Gravely scored 11. Hope Smith pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and Shae Mebane added 10. Bluefield State committed just nine turnovers in the contest.
Jeffreys paces the Lady Blues with 12.0 points per game, and she has topped 20 in each of Bluefield State's last two wins. Tasia Nolan is averaging 8.8 points per contest on 56.6 percent shooting. Mebane is the Lady Blues' top rebounder with 5.6 boards per contest.
Bluefield State is averaging 66.3 points per game as a team but allows 74.0 points per contest. However, in their last two wins, the Lady Blues have outscored their opponents by 23.0 points per game, averaging 79.5 points per game in the two outings.
The Colonials conclude their seven-game homestand on Thursday when they open Atlantic 10 play against conference newcomer and Revolutionary Rival George Mason at 7 p.m. GW then hits the road for the first time since Dec. 3 to face defending A-10 champion Saint Joseph's on Sunday, its fourth game in a nine-day stretch. The contest against the Hawks, which tips off at 1 p.m., will be nationally televised on NBC Sports Network.
