WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team hosts Young Harris College in an exhibition game on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Under the direction of second-year Head Coach Jonathan Tsipis, GW returns three starters and nine letterwinners from a 2012-13 squad which tied for seventh in the Atlantic 10 with a 14-16 overall record and 7-7 league mark, its most overall and conference wins since 2009. In addition, the Colonials won a game at the A-10 Championship for the first time since 2008, defeating Richmond, 59-53, in the first round. GW was predicted to finish fifth in the league's 2013-14 preseason poll.
Among the nine returning players are graduate student Danni Jackson, who was named to the Preseason All-Conference Third Team, and junior Chakecia Miller, who earned a spot on the Preseason All-Defensive Team. Jackson has led the Colonials in scoring in each of the last three seasons, including a team-best 10.1 points per game a year ago, and she also ranked fifth in the A-10 with 4.5 assists per game. Miller ranked third in the league and 61st in the nation with 2.6 steals per game last season and also ranked seventh in the conference in assists (3.2 apg) to go with her 7.4 points per contest.
Graduate student Megan Nipe returns following a breakout campaign in which she ranked second on the team in scoring (10.0 ppg) and third in rebounding (5.3 rpg). In addition, grad student Brooke Wilson is back for her sixth year in the Buff and Blue following a season-ending injury last fall.
The Colonials also welcome three freshmen to the lineup in Florida natives Shannon Cranshaw and Hannah Schaible and local product Caira Washington.
Young Harris, an NCAA Division II program located in northeast Georgia, returns 10 players and all five starters from last season's squad, which finished 13-13 overall and 7-12 in the Peach Belt Conference. The Mountain Lions will be led by senior forward Ladondra Johnson, a Peach Belt Preseason All-Conference selection who led the league in scoring (20.1 ppg) and field goal percentage (.593) while adding 7.6 rebounds per game last season
The Colonials open the 2013-14 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 9, when they welcome Jackson State to the Smith Center for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
