GW Swimming Heads to Nearby UMBC on Saturday

Junior Goran Koprivnjak owns the top times in the A-10 in the 100 and 200 fly events.

WASHINGTON - George Washington men's and women's swimming travel to nearby Baltimore on Saturday to face UMBC for the Colonials' first road dual meet of the season. Action inside the UMBC Aquatic Complex is slated for 1 p.m.

GW is coming off its first weekend of dual meet competition at home against Bucknell. The women's team was edged by the Bison, 140-122, while the men's side fell, 165-91. Senior Caroline Myers and rookie Carly Whitmer paced the women against Bucknell as they each won two events, while Myers also added a pair of second-place finishes. The men's squad was led by freshman Bogdan Balteanu and junior Goran Koprivnjak, who each took home two second places on the afternoon.

Myers owns the season's fastest time in the Atlantic 10 in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:16.68) as well as the second-best time in the 500 free (5:05.85), while freshman Lauren Law's 500 free time (5:10.30) ranks third. Myers also sits second in the league in the 1,000 free (10:21.39), Lee ranks third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.45) and Whitmer is third in the 100-yard butterfly (57.53).

On the men's side, Koprivnjak owns the top times in the A-10 in the 100 fly (51.38) and the 200 fly (1:52.92) while sophomore Oliver Keegan ranks second in the 200 fly (1:54.76). Keegan and classmate Jordan Sharples are second and third in the league, respectively, in the 500 free with times of 4:46.77 and 4:47.04. Balteanu ranks third in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.02) and Koprivnjak is third in the 400 IM (4:10.28), followed by rookie Matt McPherson in fourth (4:11.43).

UMBC's men's and women's teams are both 1-1 this year after defeating Rider in their season openers and falling to Navy last weekend. The Retriever men were edged by the Midshipmen, 154.5-145.5 while the women were downed, 163-137.
