NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington freshman Tobi Adewole was named Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week for games played Oct. 7-13, the league announced on Monday.
Adewole was a key part of a GW defense which allowed just one goal in 220 minutes in double-overtime contests against No. 19 Dayton and defending A-10 champion Saint Louis as the Colonials came away with two points from a pair of ties to open conference play.
A native of Ashton, Md., Adewole started both games and played 195 minutes, third-most on the team and tops among freshmen, as GW shut out the Flyers - the highest-scoring team in the country - in a scoreless draw and tied the Billikens, 1-1. Adewole, who played all 110 minutes against Dayton on Friday, also took two shots against SLU on Sunday, including a header with less than six minutes remaining in the second overtime period.
Adewole is the first Colonial to be named A-10 Rookie of the Week since Seth Rudolph on Oct. 26, 2009.
GW (3-6-2, 0-0-2 A-10) hosts Atlantic 10 rival Fordham on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
