Preseason Training Underway for GW Men's Soccer

WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer team kicked off its 2012 campaign with its first practice on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials will practice twice a day leading up to their exhibition opener against Lehigh on Thursday, Aug. 16, at Mount Vernon.
"The first day was great," said first-year head coach and GW alumnus Craig Jones ('99). "The guys came back in great shape - they obviously put their work in over the summer. Overall I'm happy with the initial fitness levels that we tested today, and I'm happy in general with how the session went. I was excited for the first day, but I'm probably even more so now knowing that the guys looked so good today."
GW returns 14 letterwinners and six starters from last season's squad which posted a 10-6-3 overall record and 7-2-0 conference mark. The Colonials claimed a share of the Atlantic 10 regular-season crown before falling to Xavier on penalty kicks in the A-10 Championship's title match.
"I'm looking forward to this next year, hopefully making the A-10 Tournament and hopefully winning it - that's our goal for this year," said senior Seth Rudolph, a 2011 All-Conference First Team selection and the Colonials' top returning scorer. "The first day went well. Our guys were fit - you could tell they were training over the summer. Everyone looked sharp."
The Colonials open regular-season play at home against Long Island on Friday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m.
