2012 Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Three George Washington softball student-athletes were named to Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams, the league announced on Wednesday. Seniors Lauren Wilson and Kara Clauss both garnered second team honors, while freshman Victoria Valos was selected to the all-rookie squad. In addition, Wilson earned a spot on the all-academic team.

The trio helped GW secure a spot in the six-team Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time since 2007 and just the second time ever. The Colonials earned the No. 4 seed in this week's tournament with an 11-9 conference record, and their 22 overall victories on the season are the third-most in program history.

Wilson and Clauss are the first Colonials to earn all-conference honors since Amanda Gabriel and Chrysanthi Halkiotis were tabbed to the second team in 2008.

Wilson has enjoyed a career year, as she has set or matched single-season program records with 39 runs scored, 36 walks, 22 stolen bases and 10 home runs. The leadoff hitter also paces GW in batting average (.319), slugging percentage (.597) and on-base percentage (.476), while ranking second in extra-base hits (18) and RBIs (26), and third in hits (46). Wilson has played an integral role in the Colonials' dramatic turnaround, as she has reached base in 17 of the last 18 games, batting .367 with 21 RBIs and 19 runs scored as GW went 13-5 during that time.

Wilson is also the first Colonials' player to earn all-academic honors since Carrie Higdon in 2008. A native of Arlington, Va., Wilson was named to the prestigious CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District First Team last week. She maintains an impressive 3.92 grade-point average as an exercise science major and has completed four semesters with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Wilson is a two-time NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete and has been recognized on the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll all seven semesters. Moreover, she was recently honored as a GW Distinguished Scholar for having the highest GPA in the School of Public Health and Health Services.

Clauss has won a school-record 14 games this season and boasts a 2.75 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 183.1 innings of work, including 15 complete games. The Davie, Fla., native is 5-1 with a 1.21 ERA in her last six starts. In addition to setting the new standard for wins in a year, Clauss has also broken several other GW single-season records, including innings pitched, shutouts (6), games started (29) and appearances (35).

Valos has put together one of the best rookie campaigns in GW history. She is batting .314 with 26 RBIs, 26 runs scored, eight doubles and eight home runs - the most by a Colonials' freshman since Jackie Yaniga hit 10 in 2005 - and she was named team MVP last week. She leads the team in hits (49), ranks second in batting average and on-base percentage (.367), and is third in homers, doubles, RBIs, runs and slugging percentage (.532). In addition, the native of Bakersfield, Calif. has started all 50 games at shortstop, where she has displayed outstanding range, recording 117 assists on the year.

Valos gives GW an all-rookie selection for the second year in a row, as teammate Chelsea Lenhart earned the honor in 2011.

GW takes on fifth-seeded Charlotte in the first game of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
