WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Atlantic 10 Conference rival Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Colonials lost to the 49ers, 4-3, in the first game before falling, 4-2, in the nightcap.
Charlotte (16-18, 2-6 A-10) struck first in game one, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the second, but the Colonials (9-23, 0-4 A-10) got one back in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Chelsea Lenhart hit a leadoff double and came around to score when the Charlotte right fielder dropped a fly ball.
GW tied it up in the fourth on an RBI double by junior Julie Orlandi, but the 49ers immediately regained the lead in the top of fifth, scoring two runs on three hits to go up, 4-2. The Colonials responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by junior Autumn Taylor to pull within one, 4-3, but that was as close as they would get.
Lexi Betancourt (10-8) earned the win for the 49ers after allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out four in seven innings. Senior Kara Clauss (6-14) suffered the loss after giving up two earned runs on 11 hits and striking out six in a complete game effort.
The Colonials took a quick 1-0 lead on a two-out home run in the first inning by freshman Victoria Valos, and an RBI single by junior Sandi Moynihan in the second plated Taylor and gave GW a two-run advantage.
Charlotte tied it in the third on a two-run homer by Sam Slade, and the 49ers took the lead for good an inning later on an RBI double by Briana Gwaltney. Charlotte added an insurance run in the sixth on Slade's two-out RBI single to left field.
Katie Watkins (5-10) picked up the win for the 49ers after allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five in seven innings. Clauss (6-15) was again saddled with the loss after giving up two runs on four hits in five innings of relief work.
The Colonials return to action on Thursday, when they visit A-10 rival Temple at 3 p.m.
