GW Women's Basketball Hosts You Can Play Day

WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team hosted You Can Play Day on Dec. 15, as part of its contest against Howard at the Charles E. Smith Center, to support inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender athletes.
GW Athletics partnered with a number of campus groups, including GW LGBT Resource Center, Multicultural Student Services Center, GW Allied in Pride, Association of Queer Women and Allies (AQWA) and the Human Rights Campaign in an effort to ensure equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation.
At halftime, a basketball signed by the women's basketball team was presented to Nick Gumas, president of GW Allied in Pride, and representatives from the GW LGBT Resource Center and AQWA.
In August, the GW Department of Athletics and Recreation launched a video campaign supporting inclusion of LGBT athletes in all facets of GW's 23 intercollegiate varsity athletics programs and campus health and wellness initiatives. The video is part of the national You Can Play campaign.
"We are committed to celebrating and supporting LGBT student-athletes," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero. "Our student-athletes will be judged by the spirit they bring to the game, their support of their teammates and their dedication to GW, not by sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. At GW, if you can play, you can play."
