WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team will play 20 of its 28 regular-season games within the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia as the Atlantic 10 Conference announced the league schedule on Thursday to complete the Colonials' slate for the 2011-12 season.
More than half of GW's 28 regular-season contests will be against teams that reached the postseason in 2011, as eight A-10 teams and non-conference programs Morgan State, Auburn, Old Dominion, Loyola (Md.), Rutgers and Georgetown each participated in the postseason last March. Additionally, the Colonials will play 12 teams which finished inside the Top 100 of the final 2011 NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).
"The competitive and local flavor of this schedule gives our loyal fans and followers a great opportunity to support our student-athletes and watch some great basketball this year," said head coach Mike Bozeman. "The A-10 has evolved into one of the most balanced conferences in the nation, and we're looking forward to a playing a non-conference schedule that will prepare us to compete within the league."
The 14-game non-conference portion of the schedule was announced in late July and features 12 contests in the D.C. region, Maryland and Virginia and seven games at Charles E. Smith Center. GW will square off against ACC, Big East and SEC foes with contests against Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Auburn and city-rival Georgetown.
GW will also play seven A-10 opponents at Smith Center and head south on Interstate 95 to battle Richmond for a total of 20 contests within 150 miles of the district.
