Women's Soccer Falls to Iowa, 4-1

WASHINGTON - Iowa tallied three goals in less than seven minutes in the second half and George Washington women's soccer could not answer as the Colonials dropped a 4-1 decision to the Hawkeyes at Mount Vernon Field Friday. GW falls to 1-3 on the year while Iowa improves to 4-0.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead early the second period, the Hawkeyes recorded three goals over a span of 6:55 and the Colonials could not recover. GW netted its first goal and last of the match at the 66:00 mark, but it was not enough to overcome the visitors in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Colonials boasted a valiant effort on the offensive end--filled with aggressive attacking and efficient passing--but could not connect at the goal.
Just under 25 minutes into action sophomore Alex Neal used a quick-footed fake to get around an Iowa defender, but her shot was stopped just shy of the net. Three minutes later, Adriana Moya fired off a free kick that was barely stopped by Hawkeyes' goalkeeper Emily Moran's fingertips.
Iowa registered its first score at 39:34 with an unassisted goal by Dana Dalrymple. The first 21 minutes of second-half action stood scoreless until a Colonials' foul inside the box forced a Hawkeyes' penalty kick. Cloe Lacasse converted the penalty to lift her squad to a 2-0 lead.
Iowa capitalized on congestion in front of goal less than three minutes later to extend its lead to 3-0. Alex Melin settled a rebounded shot and quickly sent it to the back of the net. Alyssa Cosnek connected soon after with Lacasse, who put the ball in the top right corner just over GW goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe's hands.
The Colonials registered their lone goal off a perfectly set up corner kick from junior Molly Bruh. Classmate Adriana Moya got on the end of Bruh's service and headed it to freshman Taylor Katz, who netted her first career goal.
GW held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks and Rowe finished with six saves to improve her career save total to 277, good for fourth all-time on GW's career saves list.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday, Sept. 4 when they host non-conference foe Robert Morris. Action is slated for 1 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field.
