WASHINGTON - Seniors Yoni Berhanu, Mike Burke and Brice Carr have been chosen as team captains for the George Washington men's soccer team for the 2011 season. The Colonials have also announced they will conduct open tryouts for potential walk-on players on Friday, Sept. 2.
"In Yoni, Brice and Mike, we have three seniors who have been regular starters since their freshman year. They will provide strong leadership, both on and off the field, to a young team which is beginning to mature," said head coach George Lidster, who will retire at the completion of the 2011 season, his 24th at GW.
Berhanu has logged the most career minutes of any current Colonials player and is the team's second-leading active scorer with nine goals and 29 points in 52 matches.
Burke has started 30 of his 40 career matches and has totaled three goals as an outside midfielder and defender.
Carr, who served as a team tri-captain in 2010 as well, has been a staple in the center of the GW defense since 2008, starting 42 of 47 matches. He logged a team-best 1,517 minutes and 16 full 90-minute outings as a junior in 2010.
The men's soccer program will host open tryouts for potential walk-on players on Friday, Sept. 2. The training session will be held on the newly renovated turf surface at Mount Vernon Athletic Field beginning at 11:30 am.
To be eligible for tryouts, potential walk-ons must be enrolled as a full-time student at the university and have completed the necessary paperwork by Sept. 1. More information and the necessary documentation can be found at http://www.gwsports.com/school-bio/gewa-sportsmed-walkontryouts.html.
