Pumariega Wins Penn Quaker Invitational; Colonials Place Third

FLOURTOWN, PA -- George Washington golfer Andres Pumariega is enjoying a hot streak like no other in Colonials golf history. The junior from Miami, FL, won his third straight individual title Monday with a three-over-par 145 (75-70) at the Penn Quaker Invitational near Philadelphia. Pumariega's performance helped the Colonials to a third-place finish in the 14-team field at the par-71, 6,867-yard Wissahickon Course at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, PA.
Pumariega is coming off a victory at the 51-player GW Invitational two weeks ago on the Delaware Shore and also won in a dual match with St. Thomas University on Mar. 14 in Miami, FL. Pumariega carded a first-round 75 to tie two others in 12th place before shooting a one-under 70 in Monday's second round to edge Army's Matt Krembel by a stroke. Pumariega birdied seven of the 36 holes Monday.
As a team, the Colonials combined to score a 608 (305-303), nine strokes off the pace set by the host Quakers (599) and four strokes behind runner-up Maryland (604).
GW's Brandon Rukin (78-76) and Taylor Fuqua (76-78) tied for 23rd, each carding 154s. Senior Brendan Barrack (77-79--156) tied for 30th.
Opened in 1854, the Philadelphia Cricket Club is the oldest country club in the United States.
In addition to GW, Maryland and the host Quakers, the field included Army, Lafayette, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Rutgers, St. Francis-PA, Washington & Lee, Wilmington (DE) College and a pair of Atlantic 10 teams in Fordham and La Salle.
GW next travels to the adidas Hoosier Invitational, Apr. 9-10, 2011, at Bloomington, IN.
