WASHINGTON, DC- Phillip Graeter was named the men's swimming team's Most Valuable Player at George Washington University's annual Senior Honor's Luncheon on the GW campus Thursday.
A sophomore from Schwerin, Germany, Phillip made an immediate impact after transferring to the men's team this season. At the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championships in February, he had four different Top 3 finishes, including swimming the lead leg of the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay team that helped the Colonials to a fourth-place team finish at the Championships. Phillip also took second in the 200-yard backstroke and the 400-yard IM, as well as third in the 200-yard IM.
Senior Andrew Maguire, Vice President of GW's SAAC, received the Lindsay Ferris Excellence in Leadership Award, along with SAAC President Peter Thomas of men's water polo. The pair made a concerted effort to foster involvement across the entire athletic department this year, not only from their student-athlete peers, but from coaches, staff and administrators as well.
The duo organized the successful SAAC Dodgeball tournament in December to raise funds for Miriam's Kitchen, and will host the SAAC Kickball tournament at Mount Vernon Field later today to help raise funds for the DC Special Olympics. They also teamed with local Special Olympics chapters in January to sponsor a halftime basketball game at Smith Center.
Both Peter and Andrew have assisted in increasing efforts in promoting varsity sporting events with the "Spring Sports Weekend on the `Vern" event earlier this month and the upcoming "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" promotion for this weekend's baseball series against Dayton at Barcroft Park.
They have sought to improve communication throughout SAAC by surveying representatives for ideas and initiatives and lobbied Athletic Department administration to attend SAAC meetings.
Andrew, an exercise science major and two-year captain of the men's swimming team, was named to the Athletic Department Dean's List seven times, as well as the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll twice.
