CHARLOTTE, NC -- The George Washington softball team fell in both games of a Sunday doubleheader to Atlantic 10 foe Charlotte on Sunday at the D.L. Phillips Complex. The 49ers took game one 4-1 over the Colonials and took game two, 9-1 in six innings. With the losses the Colonials fall to 12-19-1 on the season, 3-9 in the A-10, while the 49ers improve to 23-18 and 8-4 in league play.
In the first game, the Colonials were already down 3-0 when they got on the board. Junior Lauren Wilson doubled in Sandi Moynihan, who drew a walk to start the inning, to make the score 3-1 in the top of the fifth. The 49ers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth.
GW starter Kara Clauss (8-11) pitched four innings in the loss, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits, striking out one and walking two. Freshman Courtney Martin worked two innings in relief for the Colonials, allowing one run on two hits, recording three strikeouts and one walked batter.
Senior Katie Terrazas got her second hit of the day in the first inning with a two-out single. She advanced to second on a fielding error by Charlotte's rightfielder but was left stranded.
Wilson put the Colonials up 1-0 in the second inning with a solo home run to center field, her first of the season.
Terrazas put pressure on the 49er's middle infield reaching on the second error of the game in the fourth inning. Autumn Taylor and Wilson both reached on fielder's choices and Wilson was caught stealing to end the inning.
Charlotte seemed to figure out game two GW starter Heidi Penna in the later innings, roughing up Penna for two in the fourth and one in the fifth before Martin came into the game. Martin pitched two-thirds of the fifth, allowing three runs to score on five hits. Senior pitcher Ali Pardo closed out the fifth for the Colonials.
Charlotte extended their lead by three more runs in the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits, to close the game at 9-1.
GW will next take on Georgetown on Tuesday, April 20, at the Hoyas Guy Mason Field, with a 4:00 pm first pitch. The Colonials will host James Madison on Wednesday at Mount Vernon field for two games starting at 3:00 pm.
