WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington softball team put together timely hits to score runs in the first and seventh innings to defeat rival Georgetown, 4-2, at GU's Guy Mason Field on Tuesday. The Colonials improve to 13-19-1 on the season, while the Hoyas fall to 11-34. The GW victory evens the all-time series between the schools at three wins apiece.
The Colonials jumped on the board in the first inning. Chelsea Lenhart started the game with a single to left centerfield, followed by Lauren Wilson getting on the bases on a Hoyas' error. Senior Katie Terrazas executed a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to advance Lenhart and Wilson. Autumn Taylor singled in both runners with a hit up the middle of the field for the 2-0 GW lead.
Georgetown was able to even the score at 2-2, scoring single runs in the third and fifth innings off of GW starter Kara Clauss. She picked up her ninth win of the season in the complete game, allowing two runs on five hits, walking and striking out one.
In the seventh, pinch-hitter Kristi Saporito led off with a single to right, followed by Amanda Zakeri drawing her second walk of the game. Lenhart advanced Saporito and Zakeri into scoring position with a ground out behind the runners.
GW took a 3-2 lead on Wilson's single through the left side of the infield, scoring Saporito from third. Both Zakeri and Wilson advanced a base on the throw. Terrazas added an insurance run, when she reached base on an error by GU's second baseman.
The Colonials return to Mount Vernon Field for two non-conference games against James Madison on Wednesday, April 20, with the first pitch set for 3:00 pm.
