EMMITSBURG, MD - The George Washington women's lacrosse team got a combined 20 points from redshirt senior Mia Breheny, juniors Sarah Phillips and Megan Seidman, and sophomore Nicole Lacey to cruise to its second straight victory, a 16-4 triumph at Mount St. Mary's Monday night.
Phillips totaled six points on four goals and two assists, Breheny scored a game-high five goals, Lacey finished with a hat trick and two assists, and Seidman chipped in two goals and two assists to lead GW (3-6).
The victory was the Colonials' seventh in the last eight meetings against the Mountaineers, avenging a 15-14 double overtime loss in the District last spring, and improved their series lead to 7-3.
While the GW attack fired on all cylinders, scoring on 16 of its 25 shots, the Colonials' defense was just as solid. Senior goalkeeper Liz Hoffman allowed just four goals and saved 12 of 18 shots faced in 53 minutes of action, while sophomore Jess Hicks stopped two of three shots and didn't allow a goal the final seven minutes. The Colonials also forced 10 turnovers, two apiece from senior Audrey Joy, junior Casey Disharoon and freshman Jordy Bathras.
Seidman, Phillips and Breheny all scored goals within a three-minute span to give the visitors a 3-0 lead just 5:33 into the game.
Esther Rufolo scored one of her team-high two goals to pull the Mount within 3-1, but GW dominated the remainder of the first half.
Phillips and Breheny both scored twice during a six-goal spurt as the Colonials opened a 9-1 advantage at the 7:42 mark of the opening period. Rufolo ended the run with 5:32 left before halftime, but Lacey added her second goal of the half 1:37 later and sophomore Hannah McLaughlin stretched GW's lead to 11-2 with a goal 13 seconds before intermission.
Mount St. Mary's (1-7) opened the second-half scoring just 42 seconds into the period, but Lacey answered two minutes later and Breheny made it a 10-goal margin, 13-3, with 26:13 remaining.
Aided by the 10-goal margin's running clock, the Colonials spread out three goals over the final 20 minutes, with Breheny completing her season-high five-goal effort, Phillips netting her fourth goal of the night and Bathras completing the team's scoring.
Phillips, along with junior Hilary Quinn, added a game-high four ground balls, while Disharoon and Lacey led all players with three draw controls apiece. Lacey increased her career draw control total to 90, third all-time at GW and five shy of Kristin Karcsh's career mark of 95.
Phillips also climbed to a tie for third all-time at GW with 51 career assists, as well as sixth with 118 career points and eighth with 67 career goals. Seidman and Breheny sit sixth and seventh in career goals at GW with 76 and 75, respectively.
GW completes its three-game road swing and non-conference play Saturday at Johns Hopkins. Opening draw is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
