
Softball Drops Two in Final Day of Winthrop/adidas Invitational

ROCK HILL, SC - George Washington softball drop its final two games on the last day of the Winthrop/ adidas Invitational on Sunday to host Winthrop, 7-1, and Gardner-Webb, 4-0. The Colonials went 1-4 in the Invitational, falling to 7-8 on the season.
In the first game, both team's starters were able to get key outs to keep the score 0-0 until the top of the fifth. Winthrop (6-12) took a 2-0 lead off a solo homerun and a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Eagles extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth on two hits and three GW errors. WU added two more runs in the top of the seventh off a two RBI double.
GW jumped on the board in the bottom of the seventh, getting started by a pinch-hit singled from Amanda Zakeri, who advanced to second on an error. Freshman Alexandra Del Prete walked to put two Colonials on the bases for Jordyn O'Donnell. GW runners moved up one base on a groundout, loaded the bases after a pitch hit Julie Orlandi and a Chelsea Lenhart walk forced in the run.
Heidi Penna went six innings in her seventh start of the season. Penna gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out five. Courtney Martin pitched one inning, allowing two runs on one hit, while walking two and struck out one.
In the second game against Gardner-Webb, originally set for Friday night, Colonials' bats went quiet and were held to two hits.
The Bulldogs got their runs in the second, third and sixth innings, including two solo homeruns in the third, for the 4-0 victory.
Kara Clauss went four innings, giving up three runs on seven hits striking out two and walking one. Penna picked up two innings of relief work, giving up one run on two hits and walking and striking out one.
The Colonials travel back to Mount Vernon Field to get set to host Princeton for a St. Patrick's Day game, on Thursday, starting at 4:00 pm. GW jumps into Atlantic 10 Conference play on Saturday, March 19, when the St. Bonaventure Bonnies head to Washington, DC for two games starting at 12:00 pm.
