WASHINGTON, DC-- The George Washington softball team held a 4-2 lead over Princeton in the third but the Colonials couldn't answer the five runs the Tigers posted late in the game in the 7-4 loss on Thursday, at Mount Vernon Field. The Colonials fell to 7-9 while the Tigers improved to 4-7 on the season.
GW got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Tara Fogarty led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Sandi Moynihan and Jillian Stanley drew walks to load the bases with two outs and the top of the line-up coming to bat. Chelsea Lenhart hit a two RBI single to right for the GW lead.
Princeton answered in the top of the third, scoring two runs on two hits and a Colonial error.
The Colonials retook the lead in the bottom of the third, getting the lead-off batter Autumn Taylor on base with a four-pitch walk. Lauren Wilson reached base on an error by the Tigers pitcher, but was forced out in Tara Fogarty's at-bat. Amanda Zakeri entered the game as a pinch runner for Fogarty and stole second. With two outs, Kara Clauss hit a RBI-single to score Taylor from third and advance Zakeri to third. Zakeri scored during pinch-hitter Kristi Saporito's at-bat on a double steal with Clauss.
In the fifth, Princeton put the bat on the ball and scored three runs on three hits and two Colonials' miscues. The Tigers added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, for the 7-4 victory.
Colonials left eight batters on base in the last three innings in scoring position, unable to convert on three hits and two Tigers' errors.
Clauss (6-6) pitched a complete game for the Colonials, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, striking out six and walking two.
Princeton's Michelle Tolfa (2-3) and Liza Kuhn combined for seven innings of work, giving up four runs on seven hits, walking eight and striking out seven.
The Colonials return to Mount Vernon Field to kick off the Atlantic 10 Conference schedule on Saturday, when the team hosts St. Bonaventure for two games starting at 12:00 pm. Game two will start approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
