After snapping an 11-game losing skid last Wednesday with a 53-35 victory over Rhode Island, GW halted a 15-game road losing streak with Saturday's 49-36 victory at Saint Louis. Tiana Myers and Danni Jackson scored GW's opening 21 points, then Tara Booker netted 21 of the team's final 28 points to post a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double and spark the Colonials past the Billikens.
GW (7-15, 2-6 A-10) has gotten defensive over its last four games as opponents have shot better than 30 percent from the field just once in the last seven halves of play. The 71 points surrendered in the Colonials' recent two victories are the fewest allowed in a two-game stretch since allowing 70 in wins over Fordham (66-27) and Rhode Island (70-43) in March 2008.
GW will have nine players available for Wednesday's game as Kye Allums (concussion symptoms), Megan Nipe (knee), Shi-Heria Shipp (knee) and Janine Davis (illness) are unavailable. The Colonials have been hampered by injuries each of the past two seasons after having just eight players available the final 19 games of 2009-10. GW's total production out with those four players (including Shipp's 2009-10 stats): 24.2 ppg, 12.9 rpg and 4.2 apg.
Over her last six games overall, Tiana Myers is averaging 16.3 points on 53 percent shooting and 5.2 rebounds. Meanwhile, Danni Jackson has ramped up contributions since missing the Jan. 19 game at Dayton, averaging 13.4 points, 4.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals over the five-game stretch.
Charlotte has won the last two meetings in a series in which four of the five contests have been decided by 10 points or less. In last season's matchup in DC, Tiana Myers and Sara Mostafa led GW with 15 and 11 points, respectively, but the Colonials shot a season-worst 27.0 percent from the field en route to a season-low 42 points. Myers and Mostafa shot 11-of-29 combined, while the rest of the team finished 6-of-34. In GW's last trip to Halton Arena in Feb. 2009, Yolanda Lavender failed to beat the final buzzer with a running floater that would have forced overtime as the Colonials dropped a 59-57 loss to the 49ers. GW whittled a nine-point 56-47 deficit with 3:44 remaining to two with 45 seconds left, but Lavender's last-second shot as time expired wasn't reviewed due to lack of video replay.
Charlotte (18-5, 6-2 A-10) has won its last three A-10 games, all on the road, by an average of 25.0 points. Most recently, the 49ers posted an 80-53 victory at Massachusetts on Saturday.
Four players reached double figures, led by Shannon McCallum's 18 points and Kendria Holmes' 11-point, 10-assist double-double, in the 49ers' win over the Minutewomen. Charlotte shot better than 56 percent from the floor, including 10-of-18 from beyond the three-point arc, and held UMass below 30 percent to cruise to its school-record ninth straight road victory.
Charlotte ranks in the Top 3 in the A-10 in 14 statistical categories, including first in the league in field goal percentage defense (.334), three-point field goal percentage defense (.280), rebounding offense (45.3), blocks (4.8) and offensive rebounds (16.5).
The 49ers +10.4 rebound margin is second in the A-10, just two tenths behind nationally ranked Xavier, and ninth in the nation, while the 33.4 percent field goal defense ranks seventh in the country.
Charlotte's McCallum sisters combine for 20 points per game - senior Shannon leads the 49ers with 12.3 points per game and junior Paige adds 7.7 an outing. The duo has appeared in the starting lineup 10 times this season with the 49ers going 8-2 in those games. This is Paige's first season at UNCC after transferring from Gulf Coast Community College.
The 49ers strike a good scoring balance, with just over half (35.6) of their 70.0 points per game coming in the paint.
