
GW Softball Splits Games at Spartan Invitational

NORFOLK, VA- The George Washington softball team fell to Monmouth, 2-1, and defeated Norfolk State, 3-2, host of the Spartan Invitational, on Saturday at the NSU Softball Field.
Keys for the Colonials (1-1) in both games were getting the leadoff batter on the base paths. In five of seven innings against Norfolk State and four of seven innings against Monmouth, GW put their leadoff runners on base. Four of those innings saw Colonial runners cross home plate.
Monmouth (1-0), in the first game of the day, jumped out to a quick 1-0 in the first inning, stringing together base runners on two walks and scoring on a single to left. MU scored what ended up being an insurance run in the sixth inning.
In the Colonials half of the seventh, freshman Courtney Martin drew a leadoff walk. With two outs, freshman Chelsea Lenhart singled through the left side of the field, advancing Martin to second. Freshman Chelsea Curcio singled to third, advancing all the runners up one base. Senior Katie Terrazas walked in Martin for the Colonials lone run in the game.
Against Norfolk State (2-4), the Colonials saw the Spartans go ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
The Colonials answered with a run in the third inning. Terrazas doubled down the left field line to score Lenhart from first.
GW went up 3-1 when they put two on the board in the sixth inning. Kara Clauss and Curcio drew back-to-back walks to knock out NSU's starter from the game. Sandi Moynihan successfully sacrificed bunted the two GW runners into scoring position. Martin singled to short, scoring Clauss from third and advancing Curcio up a base. Freshman Lacey Cook hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Curcio.
The Colonials added another run in the top of the seventh. Terrazas walked to open the inning, advancing to second on Julie Orlandi's fielder's choice. Terrazas then scored the Colonials fourth run of the game on an error by NSU's shortstop.
Clauss tossed a complete game in the loss to Monmouth and picked up two and two-thirds innings against Norfolk State to go 1-1 on the season. The junior struck out three and walked five. Junior Heidi Penna got the game two start, throwing four and a third innings, striking out and walking two batters.
Day two of the Spartan Invitational, matches up GW against Iona at 1:00 p.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson at 5:00 p.m.
