WASHINGTON - Fueled by 24 top-three finishes - including multiple first-place finishes from juniors Phillip Graeter and Luke Quimby - the George Washington men's swimming team defeated Old Dominion, 157-105, Saturday afternoon at Charles E. Smith Center Pool. The win marks the Colonials second straight dual meet victory of the season.
"I couldn't be happier with how the team swam today," said head coach Dan Rhinehart. "It can be hard to get back into a groove after taking a break, but they worked hard and pushed themselves and ultimately got the victory."
Graeter took home three first-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley to pace the Colonials. Quimby earned hop honors in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events.
Quimby won the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:43.73. Classmate Stephen Nelson followed in a close second in 1:45.51. Senior Marshall Seedorff took home first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.03 seconds.
Quimby picked up his second first-place finish when the Colonials swept the top-three spots in the 100 free. Quimby won the event in 47.48 seconds, followed by sophomore Niccolo Wilson in second with a time of 47.88 seconds and Seedorff in third in 47.94 seconds.
Freshman Garrett Cottingham won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.71 seconds. Fellow freshman Adam Rabe finished in a close second with a season-best time of 1:00.23.
Cottingham and Rabe then finished neck-and-neck for first and second place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke. Cottingham took home first with a time of 2:12.20 while Rabe swam a 2:12.43 for second place.
Graeter won the 200 fly in 1:56.77, a full six seconds ahead of Old Dominion's second-place finisher. Graeter then won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.16. Mortensen finished in a close second with a time of 1:57.55.
Junior Alex Etz claimed second in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 53.58 seconds. Sophomore Jake Mortensen finished in third behind Etz with a time of 53.94 seconds. Nelson landed second in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 4:49.46.
Graeter earned his third top finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.78, almost five seconds ahead of ODU's second-place finisher.
The 200-yard medley relay team won the event with a time of 1:36.09. Etz, Cottingham, Graeter and Seedorff finished a full two seconds ahead of Old Dominion's second-place finishing team.
Seedorff, Wilson, Etz and Quimby won the 400-yard freestyle relay in convincing fashion with a time of 3:08.73, almost seven seconds ahead of ODU's second-place team.
