WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team will attempt to snap its three-game losing streak when the Colonials welcome Radford to Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Colonials trail the all-time series, 1-4, with a 1-2 mark at Smith Center. The last meeting was on Dec. 21, 1986, a 63-56 Radford triumph in the District.
In its last game, GW closed the first half with a 10-3 run to take a seven-point lead into halftime, but was unable to maintain the momentum in the second half, as the Colonials fell to Auburn, 55-47, on Wednesday evening at Auburn Arena.
GW (1-3) opened the game on an 8-4 run and maintained the lead for nearly 28 minutes of play before trailing for the first time at the 12:29 mark of the second half. Senior Sara Mostafa posted nine first-half points in just five minutes of action as she was held on the bench due to early foul trouble. She finished with a team-high 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting to lead the Colonials.
Auburn opened the second half with a 10-3 run and grabbed the lead for the first time with 12 minutes left in the second half. The Tigers never trailed again and clinched the game with a late 6-0 run to post the 55-47 victory.
Radford enters Saturday's game with a 4-0 with victories over Eastern Mennonite (100-42), Winston-Salem State (69-46), USC Upstate (85-52) and UNC Greensboro (75-67).
Head coach Tajama Abraham Ngongba ('97) returns to her alma mater for the first time as an opposing coach. In addition to her school-record 2,134 points, Ngongba holds the school mark for the most points in one season (675 in 1996-97) and is tied with former GW assistant coach Lisa Cermignano for the most games played (130). She ranks second at GW in career scoring average (16.4 points per game), rebounds (970) and blocked shots (326).
Abraham was named the Big South Coach of the Year last season after leading the Highlanders to a 7-0 start on the way to a 14-16 overall mark with an 11-5 record in Big South competition.
Junior guard Da'Naria Erwin Spencer leads the Highlanders, posting 20.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest. Spencer was named the Big South's Player of the Week on Tuesday after averaging 22 points in three victories last week.
Ashley Buckhannon averages 15.8 a contest while Victoria Hamilton (9.0) is just shy of double figures.
Radford has forced 95 turnovers in four games leading to 109 points. RU also has a 109-44 advantage in points off turnovers and a 78-16 edge in fast break points.
