The Colonials fell to Morgan State in overtime, 70-66, last season at the Miami Holiday Classic in Coral Gables, Fla., on Dec. 29. The trio of Tara Booker, Brooke Wilson and Sara Mostafa combined for 48 points on 17-of-35 shooting but the rest of the team finished just 8-of-33 from the floor. The game was ultimately won at the free throw line where the Bears hit 8-of-9 in the overtime period and were 21-of-23 for the game.
GW trails the all-time series, 2-3, but is undefeated in the series at Charles E. Smith Center (2-0). The last time GW hosted Morgan State was Dec. 30, 1997, a 90-49 victory.
GW opened its 2011-12 season on Sunday afternoon with a 63-41 victory over UT Arlington at Texas Hall. Senior Sara Mostafa led all players with 21 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Junior Brooke Wilson narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. With Sunday's victory, the Colonials improved to 21-16 all time in season-opening games, including a 5-1 mark in the past six seasons.
Morgan State opened its season on Friday against UMBC, falling 72-50. The Bears were picked to finish fifth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason poll following a season in which they went 17-15 overall and earned a berth to the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). The appearance marks the program's first-ever post season appearance on the Division I level.
GW's Assistant Director of Basketball Operations, Erin Hawkins, was a standout member of the Morgan State basketball team for the past four seasons. She helped the Lady Bears to 17 victories in each of her three collegiate seasons, including the programs first-ever Division I postseason appearance (WNIT) last season. Hawkins contributed 10 points in Morgan State's victory over GW last season.
