
Women's Tennis Begins Season with Win over Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The GW women's tennis team opened the 2011 season with a tough 5-2 victory over the Drexel Dragons on Friday afternoon at the Drexel Armory.
The Colonials were able to outlast the Dragons in doubles action. Mimi Hamling and Zoe Krohn paired up for the No. 1 doubles match, defeating Gozde Unkaya and Zeynep Mafa, 8-6.
Juniors Jacqueline Corba and Meg Tyner teamed up to face Drexel's Elise Leizerovich and Emma Brook at No. 2 doubles. The No. 2 doubles duo secured the doubles point for GW, winning a tough match, 8-6.
Co-captains Jennifer Hirsh and Corba won their singles matches in straight sets to go up 3-0 on the Dragons.
Sophomore Hamling fell to Mafa in the No. 3 singles match in a tough two set match, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
Freshmen Julia Blakeley and Leah Pascarella got the call to be in the line-up in their first collegiate dual match. Blakeley outlasted Emma Brook in a tough three-set match at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Pascarella also found herself in a three-set match, winning the first set 6-1 over Leizerovich. Drexel's Leizerovich won a second set tie-breaker 7-6 (6-4), before taking the third set 10-7.
The Colonials continue on the road to take on Penn, Sunday, Jan. 30. The two squads square off at the Levy Pavilion at 1 p.m.
