GW Gets First A-10 Road Test Wednesday at Dayton

DAYTON, OH - The George Washington women's basketball team plays its first Atlantic 10 Conference road game Wednesday at Dayton at 7:00 pm. The Colonials haven't lost in 12 previous trips to UD Arena and will look to avenge their first-ever loss in 25 all-time meetings with the Flyers last season.

The Colonials enter Wednesday's contest having lost seven consecutive games after starting the season 5-4. GW is also seeking its first victory away from Charles E. Smith Center this season, having lost five road games and three neutral site matchups.
GW (5-11, 0-2 A-10) will have only nine players available Wednesday night as Danni Jackson (knee), Kye Allums (concussion symptoms), Megan Nipe (knee) and Shi-Heria Shipp (knee) are injured and did not travel with the team. Jackson is the latest to succumb to injury after reaggravating a sprained right knee in Saturday's loss to St. Bonaventure.
In the most recent series meeting, GW rallied from a 14-point second half deficit to within 57-55 with 13 seconds left, but Dayton's Patrice Lalor converted a pair of late free throws to give the Flyers their first-ever victory over the Colonials in 25 meetings, 59-55, in both teams' Atlantic 10 Conference opener at Charles E. Smith Center last January. GW closed to 54-50 with 3:32 to play and had six chances to pull within a possession of the lead over the next three minutes, but missed five shots from the field and the back-end of two foul shots.
In its most recent outing Saturday, GW held an early lead for the second straight game against an Atlantic 10 Conference opponent, but St. Bonaventure turned the tide with a season-high 11 3-pointers to hand the Colonials a 72-48 loss at Charles E. Smith Center. It was SBU's first win at Smith Center in 17 tries. The Bonnies converted 11-of-21 three-pointers and shot 51 percent (25-49) for the game. After jumping out to an early 10-point lead against Richmond Jan. 8, the Colonials raced out to an 11-3 advantage less than four minutes into Saturday's game against the Bonnies. GW maintained a 25-20 lead with less than eight minutes left in the first half, but St. Bonaventure closed the half with five 3-pointers during a 20-4 run to take a 40-29 lead into halftime. The Colonials got within 40-33 on a Tara Booker three-pointer with 17:07 remaining, but the Bonnies scored eight unanswered points and the margin never dipped below double digits again.
Dayton (10-7, 1-2 A-10) fell to 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 and 10-7 overall with a 61-57 home loss to Duquesne Saturday. The Flyers' other A-10 loss came on the road at nationally ranked Xavier, 63-59, on Jan. 9. UD bridged the losses with an 84-62 victory at Saint Louis on Jan. 12.
A-10 preseason First Team All-Conference junior Justine Raterman, who leads UD in most statistical categories including points (16.6 ppg), rebounds (6.7 rpg), field goal percentage (54.7%) and three-pointers made (33), paced the team with 18 points and nine rebounds against Duquesne. The Flyers shot a season-low 30.2 percent against the Dukes, including 20.6 percent in falling behind 37-25 in the first half.
UD has used eight different starting lineups this season, but head coach Jim Jabir has settled on Elle Queen, Patrice Lalor, Casey Nance, Kristin Daugherty and Raterman the past seven games - UD is 5-2 during that stretch.
The Flyers rely on a high-powered offense that averages a league-best and 17th in the nation 79.2 points. UD also ranks second in the A-10 and ninth nationally at 38.5 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Three players - Raterman (4th, .471) and Kristin (1st, .521) and Kari Daugherty (10th, .404) all rank in the Top 10 in the A-10 in three-point field goal percentage. However, the Flyers do allow 70.1 points per game, the second-most in the conference.
Dayton was picked to finish second in the A-10 this season after finishing 25-8 overall and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
