WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's soccer team surrendered two goals in each half, including a pair of header goals from 6-foot-3 defender Ross Kelly, as Coastal Carolina defeated the Colonials, 4-0, at Mount Vernon Field Friday afternoon.
Sebastian Bahos and Justin Portillo also scored for Coastal Carolina (3-2-0), which won its third straight match. Leo Mukofsky supplied two assists, while Portillo and Luis Faz also provided helpers.
GW (1-5-0) was shut out for the second straight match and allowed four goals for the third consecutive game. The Colonials will look to regroup next Saturday at Mount Vernon with a match against the University of the District of Columbia. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm, and the match is part of GW's annual Kickin' It at The Vern event with a halftime tailgate and contests to win prizes.
The match was an early back-and-forth affair with neither team generating genuine scoring chances until the Chanticleers broke through near the midway point of the first half.
Mukofsky freed himself on the right wing and sent a low cross through the 18-yard box that eventually reached the boot of Bahos, who calmly one-timed a shot inside the back post for the 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Kelly nodded in his first goal just over eight minutes later in the 33rd with a perfectly weighted service from Faz.
Coastal added to its lead just over a minute into the second half when Mukofsky slid a quick free kick to Portillo, who measured a low, left-footed 30-yard shot past screened GW goalkeeper Jake Davis to make it 3-0.
Kelly rounded out the scoring in the 81st, heading home a Portillo corner kick from six yards out. Kelly has scored three goals this season, all on headers.
GW's best chance at goal came in the 71st when sophomore leading scorer Seth Rudolph was sent in behind the CCU backline. The reigning A-10 Player of the Week put his dipping volley on target, but directly at Angevine for a routine save.
Coastal enjoyed a 12-7 advantage in shots and 5-4 edge in shots on goal, while GW held a 7-4 margin in corners.
Davis made one stop in the loss, while Angevine turned away all four GW shots for his second clean sheet and CCU's third in as many matches.
