HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL -- George Washington's Cole Turner fired a three-round 220 (70-77-73) to place sixth among 60 golfers at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, Friday through Sunday, at the 6,887-yard, par-71 El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort near Orlando.
Turner's effort helped GW to a fifth-place finish in the 12-team field, three spots higher than last year's showing at the A-10 Championship on the same course at Mission Inn. The Colonials combined to shoot 917 (298-309-310) eight strokes back of fourth-place Dayton (909).
GW sophomore Martin Liu tied for 24th with a 232 (79-72-81) three strokes ahead of teammate Sebastian Palomares who tied for 28th with a 235 (77-82-76). Other Colonials in the field were sophomores Brandon Rukin (77-79-80--236) who tied for 33rd and junior Brendan Barrack with a 237 (74-81-82).
Charlotte senior Corey Nagy captured the Atlantic 10 individual title for the second consecutive year in leading the 49ers to their league record-tying fifth-straight championship following Sunday's final round. The 49ers finished 11-over par for the 54-hole competition, including 10-over on Sunday as they joined Penn State (1986-91) as the lone programs in A-10 history to win five consecutive golf titles.
Richmond (+29) placed second overall while Xavier (+40) came in third as it matched the 49ers for the lowest team score of the day. Dayton (+57) finished fourth, followed by the Colonials (+65), St. Bonaventure (+75), Rhode Island (+77), Fordham (+89), Saint Joseph's (+95), Temple (+100), Duquesne (+129) and La Salle (+168).
