UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- George Washington's Cole Turner fired a 9-over-par 222 to tie two others for sixth place at the 54-hole Rutherford Intercollegiate men's golf tournament hosted by Penn State Saturday and Sunday at University Park, PA. Saturday's second-round was halted due to darkness and the remaining holes were played Sunday morning followed by the third and final round in a shotgun format.
Turner carded eight birdies and averaged 4.78 strokes on the par-five holes to record his fourth top-10 finish this season. His effort helped the Colonials to an 11th-place finish in the 14-team field. GW's 927 bested A-10 foes Temple (930) and Saint Joseph's (965) as well as local rival George Mason (903). Penn State won the tournament with a 879 on its home course. The No. 62-ranked Nittany Lions were 20 strokes ahead of runner-up Towson (899). Ohio University was third with a 902.
The Colonials shot 309-310-308 (927) on PSU's par-71, 7,202-yard Blue Course. GW senior Max Hamm fired a three-round 232 (75-79-78) to tie for 37th place while teammate Sebastian Palomares tied for 42nd with a 233 (79-77-77). Other Colonials in the field were sophomores Brandon Rukin (83-81-76--240) and Taylor Fuqua (86-81-82--249). The Colonials played without junior Brendan Barrack and sophomore Martin Liu who remained on campus to take exams.
The Rutherford marked the Colonials' final tune-up before the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship on April 30-May 2 at Howey-in-the-Hills, FL. The three-day 54-hole championship takes place at the Mission Inn Resort near Orlando.
