WASHINGTON, DC-- GW softball fell in a close game to District rival Georgetown 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Mount Vernon Softball Field. The Hoyas took control of the all-time series record at 3-2, with the close win.
Both teams had a strong defensive day behind the dueling pitchers on the rubber.
The Colonials (5-31) got the first runner on the bases when Lauren Wilson drew a seven-pitch walk. Amanda Holst and Katie Terrazas were able to advance Wilson but she was stranded at third.
Georgetown (16-25) got on the board in the second inning, after getting lead-off batter Kristi Preuss on base and three batters later scoring off a double by Cara Savarse.
Kara Clauss got on with a base hit up the middle of the infield with one out already in the inning. Starting GW pitcher Elaine Nescio advanced Clauss to second but she was left stranded.
The Hoyas got an insurance run in the third when Samantha Peters hit a solo home run to left center. Nescio threw a complete seven-inning game, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out four and walking one.
The Colonials next face Howard for two on Wednesday at Mount Vernon Softball Field, with first pitch at 3:00 p.m. GW hits the road for Atlantic 10 play this weekend, with two games in two days at St. Joesph's on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday at noon before a Sunday double header at Temple beginning at noon.
