Colonials Fall to Rival Patriots 6-3

WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team fell to area rival George Mason 6-3 on Wednesday at Mount Vernon Field.
GW had a rough two innings to start the game. Colonials' starter Elaine Nescio allowed Mason to score five runs on three hits and two errors in two innings of work. Nescio walked two and struck out five.
Heidi Penna came into the game for the Colonials in the third, with a 1-2-3 inning on two ground outs and a strike out.
The Colonials got on the board in the forth inning, when Jordyn O'Donnell led off the inning with a base hit. Pinch runner Amanda Zakeri took over on the base paths for O'Donnell, taking second base on a wild pitch and third on a ground out. Lauren Wilson took first after she was hit by the pitch. Penna hit in Zakeri and Wilson with a single to right field, but ended the inning trying to take second base.
Mason added a sixth run in the top of the fifth on a hit and error, to go up 6-2 on GW.
In the sixth inning Sandi Moynihan got on base on an error by Mason's third baseman and advanced to second after she collided into the first baseman, who got pulled into the base path going after the throw. Moynihan came around to score on O'Donnell's second hit of the game.
Penna threw five innings in relief for the Colonials allowing one run on two hits, striking out six and walking two. She also went two-for-three at the plate, with two runs batted in.
The Colonials (5-26) jumps back into Atlantic 10 action when they host Fordham on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday at noon at Mount Vernon Field. The Colonials will travel to Liberty on Sunday for two games starting at noon.
