WASHINGTON -- The GW softball team split four games in the 2010 Colonial Classic at the Mount Vernon Softball Field, Saturday and Sunday.
Freshman Autumn Taylor had a big pinch-hit solo home run on Saturday against Army in the 1-0 win. Taylor's hit jumped from her bat on contact and soared over the left center wall.
Sophomore Kara Clauss got the win over the Black Knights, going three innings before giving up a hit in the fourth. Clauss held Army to four hits, struck out eight and gave up two walks.
In GW's second game on Saturday, freshman Sandi Moyinhan collected two hits, one to extend the Colonials' four-run second inning. Jordyn O'Donnell drew a walk, then senior Amanda Holst hit in Clauss, who walked to start the inning, and Moyinhan, moving pinch runner Saporito to second. Freshman Julie Orlandi kept the inning going with a groundball to left side of the field to score Saporito and Holst to take a quick four-inning lead.
Sophomore Heidi Penna got the win in two and two-thirds innings of work, allowing two runs on seven hits. Penna struck out four batters and walked two.
On Sunday, Colonials allowed a single run in the first four innings on six hits and two errors. GW got on the board in the top of the fourth when the Colonials strung together hits from Lauren Wilson, Clauss, Taylor, and Orlandi driving in Wilson for the run.
In the last game on Sunday, the Colonials managed to get four hits off of Army's starter Jessi Muckelroy who tossed a complete game shutout. GW's Penna threw six innings, allowing all five runs with three strikesouts.
GW (2-6) will hit the road on Thursday, Mar. 11 to face UMBC at 1 p.m., before heading to Miami, FL, to take on Michigan State and FIU Mar. 13 and 14.
