BALTIMORE, MD -- GW sophomore pitcher Heidi Penna tossed 10 and one-third innings in the Colonials two games against UMBC on Thursday. Penna got two no decisions for her efforts but was able to keep the Colonials in both games.
In game one, Penna came in the game in relief in the first inning after UMBC put up five runs in four hits on starter Kara Clauss before the Colonials recorded an out. Penna retired the next three batters with two ground balls and a strikeout.
The Colonials got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Lauren Wilson singled up the middle, advanced around the bases on two passed balls and scored on an Elisa Van Kirk hit.
UMBC posted three more runs on Penna before the Colonials took to the base paths in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs. The Retrievers extended their winning streak to 10 games with an 8-3 win in game one.
The Colonials posted two quick runs on the Retrievers in game two of the double header when Amanda Holst led off the game with a single up the middle, advanced by Julie Orlandi's sac bunt and scored on a hit to left field by Katie Terrazas. Terrazas scored the second run of the inning when Tara Fogarty grounded out to the left side of the field.
UMBC was held to one run in the bottom of the first inning with a homerun to right.
Both teams were unable to get runners past second base until UMBC's half of the fourth when the Retrievers tied the game at 2-2, with three hits in the inning.
The Colonials threatened in the top of the seventh when Autumn Taylor doubled but was left stranded.
In the top of the ninth, Fogarty doubled down the left field line with one out. Amanda Zakeri replaced Fogarty on the base paths and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring the winning run on a Taylor single. The Colonials were able to shut the door on the Retrievers in the bottom of the inning to win 3-2.
GW hits the road this weekend to take on Michigan State for two games on Saturday, March 12 at 12 p.m. in Miami, FL, before facing FIU for two more on Sunday, March 13 at 12 p.m. The Colonials return home to host La Salle to open the Atlantic 10 conference schedule with a double header starting at 3 p.m.
