Softball Drops Two to Michigan State in Miami

MIAMI, FL -- The Spartans of Michigan State got the best of the GW Colonials in the first meeting between the two softball teams. Although the Colonials out hit the Spartans, 8-6 in game one, the Spartans won 6-2. Game two saw the Colonials shut out 8-0 in five innings by the Spartans.
In game one, Michigan State posted three runs on the board after knocking out GW starter Kara Clauss after facing one batter. Heidi Penna came in to toss the rest of the game, allowing five runs on six hits, walking two and striking out three.
Freshman Sandi Moynihan got the Colonials on the board in the bottom half of the second inning with a solo homerun to left field. The Spartans scored one run in the third and fourth to extend their lead 5-1.
Moynihan also kick-started the bottom of the fourth with a double and was advanced around the bases on hits by Ali Waterman and Julie Orlandi, and a ground out by Amanda Holst to score.
Michigan State put a single run on the board in the top of the seventh before ending the game with Penna catching a Spartan runner on the base paths at second base.
In game two, Michigan State (10-13) posted five runs on starter Clauss in the first two innings on five hits, four Colonial defensive errors, walking one and striking out two. Relief pitcher Penna was tagged with the other three Michigan State runs on six hits, walking three and striking out two.
The Colonials were out hit in the second game 11-2 by the Spartans, with sophomore outfielder Lauren Wilson collecting both for the Colonials.
GW (3-9) faces FIU on Sunday, March 14 for two games starting at 12 p.m. in the final day of the Golden Panther Invite. The Colonials return home to host La Salle to open the Atlantic 10 conference schedule with a double header starting at 3 p.m.
