WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team was held to two hits in the 3-1 loss to Rhode Island on a chilly Friday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Softball Field.
Neither team could get a runner past second base until Rhode Island pushed two around in the fifth inning after getting a lead off double from Kelly Coker. She advanced to third when Jackie Kampmeier beat out a hit to the Colonials shortstop Jordyn O'Donnell. Coker scored on a passed ball and Kampmeier came home on a single down the left field line in back-to-back plays for the Rams to take a 2-0 lead.
The Colonials answered in the sixth inning, putting together a lead off single from O'Donnell and a sacrifice bunt by Julie Orlandi. Jamie Yaniga, pinch running for O'Donnell, moved up to third when Elisa Van Kirk got on base on an error by Rhode Island's third baseman. Amanda Holst, who re-entered the ball game for pinch hitter Van Kirk, stole second to put runners at second and third. Lauren Wilson hit a deep fly ball to center field, scoring Yaniga, but stranding Holst.
Rhode Island put a third run on the board in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
Both starting pitchers went the distance for their teams. Colonials' starter Kara Clauss tossed a complete game in the loss, allowing eight hits, striking out six and walking one. Rhode Island's starter tossed seven innings striking out four and walking two.
The Colonials (4-14, 1-2 A-10) and Rhode Island (6-16, 1-0 A-10) will meet again on Saturday, Mar. 27 at noon. On Sunday, No. 24 Massachusetts comes to town for a double header beginning at noon at Mount Vernon Softball Field.
