PHILADELPHIA, PA - Less than 24 hours after its home finale, the George Washington women's basketball team plays its final regular-season game of the 2009-10 season at Temple Saturday at 1:00 pm. This marks the third time in the last four seasons GW and TU complete their regular seasons against each other.
At 3-10 and currently 11th in the league standings, the Colonials would need a victory over the Owls, a loss by Rhode Island, or losses by both Fordham and La Salle to secure a bid in the A-10 Championship, hosted at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD, March 5-8. GW has qualified for all 27 previous A-10 Championships since the tournament began in 1983 and has never been seeded lower than ninth for the event.
If GW secures an A-10 Championship bid, it would be as either the 11th or 12th seed, playing at either 2:30 pm (#5 vs. #12) or 8:00 pm (#6 vs. #11) next Friday, March 5.
GW (6-20) is coming off a 78-54 loss to Richmond in Washington Friday afternoon. The Colonials then boarded a charter bus at 3:00 pm and arrived in Philadelphia at 6:30 pm. Freshman Shi-Heria Shipp scored 12 points for the second straight game to lead GW.
GW has lost two in a row and three of its last four against Temple. Eleven of the last 14 meetings have been decided by single digits, including the Colonials most recent trip to the Liacouras Center, a 68-66 upset by the Owls over the #13 Colonials.
Temple (21-7, 10-3 A-10) avenged a Feb. 20 loss at Dayton with a 77-67 victory at Richmond Wednesday. The win over the Spiders was the Owls sixth in their last seven games and 11th in 13.
TU is currently tied for second in the A-10 standings with Dayton at 10-3 and has clinched at least the No. 3 seed, but would lose out on the tiebreaker due to the loss to the Flyers. A victory and a UD loss Saturday would secure the No. 2 seed, while victories or losses by both teams would give TU the No. 3 spot.
Only a sophomore, Kristen McCarthy is fourth among the A-10's top scorers at 14.7 points per game, but leads the league with 18.0 points through 13 conference games, including a Temple record 42 points against Charlotte Feb. 13. She scored 17 points to lead the Owls against the Spiders Wednesday.
TU's season rebounding margin of +7.7 ranks 11th in NCAA Division I, and its scoring defense of 54.8 ppg ranks 13th nationally.
