WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team plays its first of three games in the final week of the regular season against Saint Louis Tuesday at Charles E. Smith Center at 7:00 pm. The Colonials are 11th in the Atlantic 10 standings with three league contests remaining and trail the ninth-place Billikens by a half-game.
Neither a victory nor a loss Tuesday seals GW's fate in its quest for an A-10 Championship bid. However, a victory and a Wednesday loss by either Rhode Island or La Salle would secure one of the 12 tourney spots for the Colonials. GW has qualified for all 27 previous A-10 Championships since the tournament began in 1983 and has never been seeded lower than ninth for the event.
GW (6-18, 3-8 A-10) snapped a four-game losing skid and moved closer to securing a bid to the A-10 Championship next weekend with a 56-47 victory over Fordham at Smith Center Saturday. Sophomore Tiana Myers led three double-digit scorers with 16 points, including 12 in the second half after playing just 10 minutes in the first period. Sophomore Sara Mostafa turned in her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, classmate Kay-Kay Allums added 12 points and seven boards off the bench and redshirt freshman Brooke Wilson grabbed a career-high 14 caroms.
The Colonials have won all four previous meetings against the Billikens by an average of 21.0 points per game, including a +31 average margin in two victories at Smith Center. Last season's meeting in St. Louis was the first decided by less than 17 points with GW capturing a 67-62 win in its first-ever visit to SLU's new Chaifetz Arena.
Saint Louis (10-17, 4-8 A-10) is coming off an upset of sorts with a 65-63 victory over Charlotte at Chaifetz Arena Thursday night. The victory was the second straight and third in four games for the Billikens, who have climbed from 13th in the A-10 standings to a tie for ninth in just over a week.
SLU trailed Charlotte, 39-31, with 15:54 left, but rattled off 15 straight points over the next three and a half minutes to grab a 46-39 lead. The teams' traded the lead four times until the Billikens grabbed a 56-55 lead with 4:33 left. Lauren Woods led SLU with 21 points and earned A-10 Player of the Week honors after beginning the week with a career-high 27 points in a win over Fordham. Woods is fifth in the A-10 in scoring at 14.3 points per game.
Amanda Kemezys recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds against the 49ers. Kemezys ranks in the Top 10 in the league in rebounding (9.3 rpg) and field goal percentage (49.2%) and is 11th in scoring at 12.5 points per game.
The Bilikens finished ninth in the A-10 with a 6-8 mark last season, its most league wins since joining the conference for to the 2005-06 season.
