Men's Soccer Shut Out by Fordham, 3-0

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's soccer team fell behind by a goal in the first half and allowed two more strikes in the second half in a 3-0 loss to Fordham at Mount Vernon Field Friday afternoon.
GW (2-11-0, 0-4-0 A-10) will recognize four student-athletes - Erik Haug, Marcus Ranney, Kory Trott and Steve Wujek - during Senior Day ceremonies at its home finale Sunday against La Salle. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
Fordham (8-5-0, 3-1-0 A-10) got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute when Marcus Axelsson headed in the game-winner from six yards away. John Niyonsaba played a 45-yard free kick to Julian Nagel, who nodded a header into the box to a waiting Axelsson.
That one-goal margin remained until the 53rd minute when John McHugh took advantage of a GW defensive miscue to chip sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Lafferty from 15 yards out. Defender Phil Ferrantello's long-ball service took a high bounce over a defender, McHugh raced in and converted the one-on-one opportunity against Lafferty.
The Rams capped their third straight victory in the 78th minute when Tim Richardson cut back a centering pass into the middle of the box for an open Matt DesRoches, who one-timed a shot into the open net to produce the 3-0 final.
For the second straight match, the Colonials held a shot advantage (9-8), but couldn't break through against the A-10's third-most stingiest defense. Ryan Meara played the opening 82 minutes and made three saves to earn the victory for the Rams, while Jon Bratincevic maintained the clean sheet over the final eight minutes.
GW's best opportunity once again came from the boot of junior Yoni Berhanu. The Colonials won a free kick from 22 yards out in the 47th minute and Berhanu hit a right-footed bender around the wall targeting the lower left corner. However, Meara made a diving stop, then swatted away the rebound to keep GW scoreless.
Lafferty finished with three saves in the loss for the Colonials.
