Men's Basketball Falls at Rhode Island, 72-66

KINGSTON, RI -- GW rallied from a 16-point, first-half deficit to get within three but fell short, 72-66, to Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 game Saturday afternoon at the Ryan Center.
GW sophomore Tony Taylor led the Colonials with a career-high 22 points, 18 coming in the second half. Freshmen Lasan Kromah and Dwayne Smith added 13 and 10 points, respectively, for GW.
Rhode Island (17-3, 5-2) was led by Keith Cothran's 14 points. Rhode Island sank 9-21 three-pointers on the afternoon including 3-of-4 by freshman Akeem Richmond who finished with 11 points. Lamonte Ulmer added 10 points for the Rams.
GW (12-8, 2-5) shot 48 percent (28-58) for the game but hit just 3-6 from long range. The Colonials committed 20 turnovers to 15 for the Rams.
URI went on a 16-4 run midway through the first half to take a 32-16 lead at the 6:05 mark and took a 37-26 lead into halftime. For the second straight game, the Colonials failed to convert a three-pointer in the opening half misfiring on two attempts while the Rams hit 4-12 from long range. , GW opened the second half with a 12-5 run to cut the deficit to six at 44-38 at the first media timeout, and to four at 49-45 by the second media timeout. The Colonials got to within three (58-55) with 5:57 showing but could get no closer.
